Applications for 2017-2018 Committee- Now Open!

Lancaster Flash Literary Journal is now accepting applications for the 2017/2018 Editorial Committee! The following positions are open to anybody who studies at Lancaster University and has a passion for literary talent, writing, editing and design. The 2017/2018 Committee will be responsible for Flash from of the beginning of the summer break (2017) to the end of summer term (2018).

The available positions are: Illustrator (1 position); Editor (up to 6 positions); Publicity Editor (1-2 positions) and Executive Editor (1-2 positions). They are detailed below.

 

Illustrator (1 position)

The Illustrator is mainly responsible for how the journal looks, comes across to others. They will work closely with the Co-Executive Editor to produce designs and illustrations for the print journal, certificate, posters, and the online blog if necessary. They are expected to adhere to strict deadlines and attend committee meetings. The illustrator also has access to the Instagram page and is expected to post writing prompts using Flash’s social media sites with help from the Publicity and Events Editor(s).

This role requires someone who is:

  • Well organised and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Easily reached through Facebook messenger, or alternatively (if willing to provide a mobile number) Whatsapp or text message.
  • Skilled in creating intricate and inspiring illustrations for print and/or online.
  • Ideally an Art/ Design student passionate about their work.

 

Editor (6 positions available)

Submissions for our issues (published on average twice per term) are divided equally between editors, who are then expected to read and constructively critique their pieces. Following this, they are to liaise with their writers over the course of a week via email, offering advice and further edits to any redrafts their writers send during this time.

Other duties include attending committee meetings (held once or twice a fortnight), launch parties, and events.

This role requires someone who is:

  • Skilled in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Passionate about literature, willing to learn and to share ideas, interested in Flash Journal and what we do, and happy to work as part of a team.

 

Publicity and Events Editor (2 positions available)

A Publicity and Events Editor has two primary roles: firstly, they are (with the second Publicity and Events Editor) to publicise Flash and advertise our journals, launch parties and events using posters, social media and public announcements (such as two-minute talks before lectures). Secondly, they are to work with the executive editor(s) to organise events (previous ones include The Uncanny, Poetry by Candlelight, and Flash Floods) once a term, aimed to engage students and staff who share our passion for literature.

Other duties include attending committee meetings (held once or twice a fortnight), launch parties and events, and also assisting in the editing process should the journal receive a high number of submissions.

This role requires someone who is:

  • Well organised and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Easily reached through Facebook messenger, or alternatively (if willing to provide a mobile number) WhatsApp or text message.
  • Skilled in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Passionate about literature, willing to learn and to share ideas, interested in Flash Journal and what we do, and happy to work as part of a team.
  • Able to use and access software such as, or similar to, Adobe Photoshop.
  • Willing to speak publicly to promote Flash.

 

Executive Editor (2 positions available)

An executive editor is responsible for managing Flash and the committee along with the co-executive editor. They are expected to frequently liaise with members of the team to ensure that things are going smoothly and to assist if they are struggling. They are to organise meetings, plan the issue deadlines and the dates of launch parties, events, etc., and to publish issues online on our WordPress. They are also in charge of the budget, and acquiring the appropriate funds from the department. They must ensure that the journal is sent to the printers on time and that everything functions smoothly.

Other duties include forming a strong, committed team through organising occasional, casual gatherings (such as meeting up in a café or a restaurant, for example), attending committee meetings (held once or twice a fortnight), launch parties and events, and also assisting in the editing process should the journal receive a high number of submissions.

This role requires someone who is:

  • Well organised and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Easily reached through Facebook messenger, or alternatively (if willing to provide a mobile number) Whatsapp or text message.
  • Skilled in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Passionate about literature, willing to learn and to share ideas, interested in Flash Journal and what we do, and happy to work as part of a team.
  • Willing to speak publicly to promote Flash.
  • Approachable, confident, and capable of keeping the team happy and engaged.
  • Has access to and is capable of using software such as Adobe InDesign/ Microsoft Publisher.
